The social media-sewing combo is trending hard. Making unique garments and posting them on a blog or Instagram to inspire others? The growing number of blogger and Instagrammer Sewist(a)s worldwide shows no sign of slowing. That’s why Fibre Mood regularly features Sewist(a)s with their original hacks of Fibre Mood patterns. This time, we’re showcasing Florence from over @florence_laforge and her #Belle pattern hack. Check out her fabulous creation with a twist here!
Hi there! My name is Florence (@florence_laforge). I'm a primary school teacher and have been crafting forever (drawing, painting, engraving, etc.). I started sewing on my maternity leave in 2019 and haven’t stopped since! Mainly, I sew for myself and my daughter, but will occasionally make something for my mum or my sisters.
I often add a personal touch to the patterns I sew. What do I love about sewing? You can do exactly what you have in mind. As frustrating as it may be, even if the result doesn’t necessarily turn out like you expected – you always learn something! Instagram is brilliant source of inspiration; I adore seeing what other Sewist(a)s are making!
I've already picked out the fabrics for my winter coat; I'm considering making the Hunter or Rya, which I'll also be sure to line. I'm also on the lookout for a waistcoat or shawl pattern; I've got a gorgeous piece of beige wool in Glen check begging to be used!
By midsummer, I'm already dreaming about the next season.
A guide to my Belle pattern hack
I stole the neckline from the Norma pattern for my Belle hack; the drape looks amazing. I didn’t stop there though; I also used the Norma back. However, I extended it by a few centimetres so that the back cutout wouldn’t be quite as deep.
I added a button tie at the back to make sure the top would stay neatly in place. To do that, I cut two 25 cm x 5 cm strips of fabric, but you can easily alter it based on the look you’re going for, e.g. wider or narrower ties. It’s not a problem at all!
For the flounce, I made a simple rolled hem with my overlocker.
I also lined the bodice with transparent cotton voile. That’s something I always do; I don’t like when people can see through my clothes! It also provides the garment with a nice finish.
