Kattun Stoffe
Interview
Where does your love for sewing come from, or the idea to turn it into a profession?
Elisabeth’s love for sewing and textiles has accompanied her throughout her entire life – both privately and professionally. After training as a fashion seamstress, studying fashion engineering (Dipl.-Ing. FH) and working in various roles within the garment industry, the idea arose to turn her passion and experience into her own project when she moved back to her hometown of Günzburg. What began as a small fabric shop quickly grew into something bigger: KATTUN-Stoffe.de.
How long have you been running your business?
KATTUN was founded after moving to the countryside, initially as a small fabric shop near Günzburg. As early as 2019, the focus shifted to online retail, with the aim of reaching a broad audience through a well-structured webshop offering high-quality fabrics and personal service.
What added value does an “offline” shop offer?
Our main offering is online, but with the same personal approach as a physical store. We offer fabric samples, colour cards and individual advice via email or phone. Personal contact is extremely important to us – we support our customers with genuine expertise and enthusiasm.
Although a physical store is not part of our concept, we try to replicate that experience as closely as possible through fast delivery and personal support.
What can a Sewista expect from your shop?
A carefully curated range of over 2,500 fabrics, including many permanently available qualities in a timeless, modern colour palette. Whenever possible, our focus is on natural and/or sustainably produced products. We are one of the few online shops to be GOTS certified.
Particularly popular are our own designs from the KATTUN Creative Studio (including bestsellers with diagonal and vertical stripes) and our exclusive collaboration with Lillemo, whose beloved motifs are printed on high-quality organic fabrics. In addition, we offer a wide range of labels, iron-on designs, patches and accessories such as matching cuffs, threads and interfacings.
Where do you find inspiration for new fabrics and patterns?
Inspiration comes from many sources: current patterns, textile trends, colour stories and, above all, exchange with our customers. Platforms such as Fibre Mood, sustainable blogs and the wishes of our community play a major role.
Are there any nice hotspots near your shop for Sewistas?
Our location in Günzburg offers many great destinations: a charming old town, cycling routes along the Danube, cosy cafés and Legoland for families. Perfect to combine with a creative short getaway.
What was the first pattern you ever sewed?
A pillowcase, when I was a small child.
Do you notice a revival of the self-made fashion trend?
Very much so! More and more people want to sew again – for fun, for quality andsustainability, orto experience fashion in a more individual and conscious way.
Do many young Sewistas count among your customers?
Yes! Especially young Sewistas are rediscovering sewing, inspired by social media or the desire to create clothing according to their own ideas and values. Our design approach wi thmodern colours, timeless patterns and high-quality materials appeals directly to them.
Which Sewista do you admire?
The diversity, style and craftsmanship we discover daily through our customers on Instagram and other platforms continue to inspire us. They show how much passion there is in handmade fashion.
What is your ultimate dream?
Our dream is to become one of the leading addresses for modern, stylish sewing in the German-speaking region – with a well-thought-out assortment, a clear vision, strong in-house designs and a webshop that not only looks good but functions perfectly.
What is your favourite Fibre Mood pattern?
The Uzma top – I still love wearing it and wear it very often.
What is your favourite Fibre Mood fabric?
That’s a difficult choice – there are so many beautiful Fibre Mood fabrics!
Which pattern would you recommend to a beginner Sewista?
Our colleague Nina, who mainly handles customer support, also teaches many sewing classes. Beginners usually start with a pillowcase or a tote bag – achievable projects that are quick to sew and avoid frustration.
Which pattern is perfect for a Sewista looking for a challenge?
The Elsie jacket – welt pockets, a zipper and lining require precision and care, but the result is absolutely worth it.
Do you have a golden tip for Fibre Mood Sewistas?
Choose high-quality fabrics that are pleasant to work with and that you will actually wear. That way, sewing is not only fun but also meaningful.
