We may not have to tell you. Finding the right fabric for your next sewing project is not always so easy. Not every fabric lends itself to every design. One pattern requires a light fabric and another a heavy fabric to create sufficient volume. In short, the search for the perfect fabric does not always go smoothly. In this article, we will give you some tips & tricks to avoid choosing the wrong fabric.
1. Read the instructions
For each Fibre Mood pattern, we recommend which fabrics the pattern will look best in. This is purely a guideline. We are absolutely not going to stop you from colouring outside the lines ;)
2. Get to know your fabrics
Before starting a sewing project, take the time to learn about the different types of fabric. Know which fabrics are suitable for which type of garment. And which fabrics work best for your specific project.
3. Take a test
If you are not sure if the fabric is suitable for your sewing project, buy a small amount of that fabric and test it out. By creating a sampler, you will be able to see how the fabric behaves when sewing a particular technique. Wash and iron the sampler too. This way, you are completely sure whether or not the fabric is suitable for your project.
4. Read the care instructions
Some fabrics require special care, such as dry cleaning or hand washing. When choosing a fabric, make sure you consider the care instructions. What we certainly don't want is for the garment - after all those intensive hours of sewing - to end up in the bin straight away. In short, it is best to treat your fabrics with care.
5. Get inspired
Check your socials for a flood of inspiration! Search e.g. on Instagram #fibremood + pattern name and you will find plenty of beautiful creations from that pattern. Who knows, maybe someone else made this pattern in the type of fabric you want to use.
By taking the time to carefully consider your fabric choice, you can avoid making the wrong choice and make your sewing project a success! Still looking for a fabric for your next sewing project? Then be sure to check out our Fibre Mood fabrics in collaboration with Polytex.
