Denim has been a staple in the fashion world for years, and it is also popular on the runway. From full denim looks to oversized jackets and wide-leg trousers, you can make virtually anything with it. Starting a denim project can be intimidating. How should you tackle it? Let us share some essential tips with you!

Choose the Right Thread and Needles

Preparation is key! Make sure your sewing machine is ready to handle thick denim layers. Use a jeans needle (90/14 or 100/16) for thick denim fabrics. If you are working with a lighter, softer denim, feel free to use a regular needle. You can use normal thread when stitching, but for decorative stitching, we recommend topstitching thread (sometimes called buttonhole thread). It’s stronger and looks much nicer on the fabric!

Use a Levelling Plate

Remember that mysterious plastic plate that came with various feet and attachments for your sewing machine? You probably have no idea what it is. That’s a levelling plate, also called a ‘seam/hump jumper’ or a clearance plate. When you place it under your presser foot, it helps keep the presser foot level. This allows the foot to glide more easily over thick layers of fabric and bulky seams, which is ideal when working with multiple layers of denim. Don’t have one? You can use a piece of cardboard or a folded piece of fabric as an alternative.

Hammer Thick Seams

When you need to sew over thick layers of fabric, you can first press them flat. While the fabric is still warm, tap it with a hammer. This will flatten the fabric fold by a few millimetres – and every millimetre counts! Of course, be careful not to damage the fabric. As an extra tip, we recommend putting another piece of fabric between the hammer and the denim.

Use the Right Stitch Length

The right stitch length is crucial when working with denim. Denim projects often involve decorative stitching, and they look best with a slightly longer stitch length (3-4 mm). This ensures a nice, even result and helps prevent your machine from getting stuck on the thick fabric.

With these tips, you are all set to bring your own denim creations to life. Need more inspiration? We might have some ideas for you.
