Types of snaps
Snaps come in all colours and sizes, as well as different shapes. Can't see the wood for the trees? Then here are some handy tips on the most common snaps ????
-
Snap fasteners to sew on, these are perfect when you don't want it to be visible from the outside.
-
Snaps to put on with pliers or specific tools - Prym has a large selection
Preparation is everything
As with other finishes, good preparation is half the battle. So before you start the real work, think about:
-
What function the snap needs to perform (this will determine which one you choose).
-
Press fasteners are great when you have several layers of fabric. Be sure to first reinforce the wrong side of the fabric with interfacing.
-
Mark where the press fastener should go with a basting thread or tailor's chalk.
-
Test, test, test! Try it out on scrap fabric first.
How to install snaps
Check out the tutorial here on installing snaps. In the video we’ve used Prym press fasteners here and the package includes a tool for installation. All you need then is a hammer, a revolving punch plier (or an awl).
