Because without zips, there would be no easy fastenings, no clean fit, and quite simply, a lot less sewing fun. Today we celebrate Zipper Day, with a mix of inspiration and practical tips.

Why a zipper is more than “just a fastening”

A zipper does more than keep your garment closed. It helps a piece fit beautifully, makes designs practical to wear, and can either blend in seamlessly or stand out as a detail. In short, a zip may be small, but it has a big impact on the final result.

Invisible or eye-catching?

Not every zip needs to be seen, but it certainly can be.

On one hand, the invisible zip remains popular in minimalist designs, where the focus is on a clean finish and a refined silhouette. On the other hand, zips are meant to stand out. Think metal zips, chunky versions, or bold colour accents that are intentionally integrated into the design.

Playful applications are also on the rise, such as asymmetrical zips or multiple zips in one garment, allowing a single design to be worn in different ways. In short, a zip can either disappear completely or steal the show. There’s almost nothing in between anymore.
