Help! Which Zip Do I Need?
Zips come in various materials, shapes, colours and lengths. But which type is suitable for your project? With our handy overview, you will be able to find the perfect match in no time. ?
Types of Zips
Zips can be divided into two major groups: separating (open end) and non-separating (closed end) zips. You’re probably familiar with separating zips from jackets, where the zip can be split into two parts. Non-separating zips, on the other hand, are used in items like skirts and trousers. These zips cannot be fully opened and remain in one piece.
Another way to categorise zippers is by material: metal zips, spiral zips, and moulded zips. These differ in both the material they are made from and the shape of their teeth.
Metal zips have metal teeth that interlock in a scalloped fashion to create a strong closure. Coil zips, made of nylon, do not actually have teeth, but instead feature two interlocking coils. Invisible zips fall under this category. Lastly, you have moulded zips, which are made of plastic. The plastic teeth are melted onto the tape, and again, they interlock in a scalloped pattern. Generally speaking, moulded zips are the strongest, while metal zips are often chosen for their decorative look.
