As a Sewista, you obviously know how important it is to choose the right fabrics for your projects. But just as important is knowing how to care for and treat these fabrics to ensure they last as long as possible. Here we give some fabric care tips to help you get the best out of your sewing materials!
PRE-WASH
Did you know that it is important to pre-wash your fabric(s) before starting a project? Pre-washing pre-shrinks the fabric, before you cut out your pattern pieces. Without pre-washing you run the risk of your fabric shrinking after you make it and your garment might end up being too small and/or too short. Pre-washing also removes residual chemicals, dyes or finishing agents that could cause shrinkage or fading later on. Extra advantage: you also experience the real texture, drape and colour of your chosen fabric.
PRESSING
Pressing makes a big difference in the quality of your finished project. Always test the heat tolerance of the fabric and use a pressing cloth to protect delicate or synthetic fabrics from direct contact with the iron.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT THREAD
Choosing the right thread for your fabric is crucial for both the sewing process and the longevity of your creations. Use a thread that matches the fibre content as well as the weight of the fabric. Don't use heavy thread on lightweight fabrics either, as it can cause creases or even damage the fabric.
HANDLING DELICATE FABRICS
With delicate fabrics such as silk, chiffon or lace, it is best to use sharp and fine needles to avoid visible holes. Pin within the seam allowances or use clips instead of traditional pins. Also consider using tissue paper or stabiliser underneath the fabric for extra support when sewing delicate fabrics. Extra tip: always practise on scraps before working on the actual garment to avoid costly mistakes.
CLEANING AND STAIN REMOVAL
Accidents happen and stains may occasionally appear on fabrics. When this happens, it is crucial to act quickly. Gently pat the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel; avoid rubbing as this can spread the stain. Test each stain removal method on an inconspicuous area before applying it to the stain. Follow the fabric's care instructions and consider seeking professional help for stubborn stains and delicate fabrics.
