What is the history of Mettler?
Mettler was founded in 1883 in Switzerland by Mister Mettler-Müller. They started with a spinning mile and a factory for sewing threads and they quickly reached a nice reputation and size. That’s why in 1988 they became part of the Amann Group, a big corporation offering high-quality threads – mainly for the industry. Today our headquarter is based in the city of Boennigheim, which is located in the South-West of Germany. We offer high quality sewing and embroidery threads under the consumer brand Mettler.
Can you briefly present the products that you offer?
We offer high quality threads for sewing, embroidery, quilting and overlocking. Our product range includes threads made of synthetic fibres but also some made of natural fibres like cotton, you can find them in many different colours, tickets and lengths.
To give you a quick insight of our most important products: we have the universal sewing thread called Seralon which is called Metrosene outside of Europe. For embroidery we have Poly Sheen, which is one of our bestseller for this application. For overlocking we mainly sell Seracor. And for quilting we have an awesome cotton range called Silk-Finish Cotton. Our two latest articles are quite popular - the elastic thread Seraflex, and the sustainable Seracycle which is 100% made from recycled plastic bottles.
Why should people buy their thread from Mettler?
We are an honest and down to earth brand with a lot of experience and know-how. This know-how within the Amann Group allows us to not only meet the high demands in the industrial area, but also, we are able to transfer the quality of the industrial threads and this knowledge to our consumer products.
Our goal is really to offer the best quality to our customers, it’s very important because we think that people put a lot of effort and passion into their creations, therefore the materials should be of high quality. You want your creation to last a long time, right? So having a good sewing machine, good needles, fabric and patterns are important, but we shouldn’t forget the thread! It is as important; it holds everything together.
We also give great importance to the environment and its protection. Our production sites and products follow different regulations and certifications, for example our threads are certified by the STANDARD 100 by OEKO TEX®, it guarantees the use of non-harmful chemicals in our threads.
What values do you wish to communicate with your brand?
We want to be an honest, fair, reliable and progressive brand that offers high quality products respectful of the environment.
Where does Mettler position itself regarding the environmental protection?
The Environmental Protection is crucial for us. On our website you can find our sustainability report where all the achievements and goals are reported. For example, we are making big investments in renewable energy sources, and we are always working on the reduction of our plastic within the production process.
Last year we eliminated all the plastic foils around most of our spools and now our thread kit boxes are made of cardboard from sustainable forest management. We are very happy with this! Also last year we launched the Seracycle thread which is made of 100% recycled plastic bottles.
What is the mission of Mettler?
We want to be the most requested brand when it comes to sustainable and premium threads by offering threads with the best quality and lowest environmental impact.
What has been the biggest challenge in running your business so far?
We think for sure it's the social change in learning handicraft skills and needlework.
Nowadays sewing isn’t taught in school as a regular subject like in the past. If you want to learn it now you will have to follow online tutorials or take sewing classes. And this social change has been difficult for us in a way that we had to think about how we could communicate a physical activity like sewing in the online world. And how we could shift from offline to online, this has been the biggest challenge that Mettler has encountered in the last years.
Especially due to the Covid situation, our retailers also had to think about this change, as normally most of the people would have gone to the physical shops and all of a sudden our retailers had to think of a new way of selling: online.
Where do you see Mettler in five years?
We want to invest even more time and effort in the digitalization of our brand by working more on our social media and online communication channels. Together with our customers, the retailers, we want to create an awesome digital reputation of our Mettler brand!
Within the Amann Group we will focus on the ecological footprint of our corporation, which is truly important for us.
