Hi! I'm Mieke and I post my creations on Instagram under the name @sewista_mc.
How did your passion for sewing begin?
I started sewing in 2016. As a child, I was always very creative and sporty, so for my choice of studies, I had to toss up between sports or creative studies. Since I love being active and can't sit still very well, I went full steam ahead for my great love of sports. Ten years ago, I got the chance to turn my passion into my profession, so I lost sight of my creative side for a long time.
With the birth of my second child, I often passed myself by, so I felt the need to be a bit creative again. I tentatively started with an old sewing machine and went to a start to sew course at Framalo. Soon this really turned out to be my thing. Sewing has become an outlet for me and the saying "sewing is my therapy" fully applies to me!
I mostly started with projects for my son and daughter because they always succeeded. Initially, I did not enjoy sewing for myself as I found it very difficult to determine the right size. As I gained more experience and knowledge, I did start making more and more garments for myself. Occasionally, I also make something for my husband, although I must admit that he usually comes last. ????
Where did the name @sewista_mc come from? And why did you choose this one?
I chose sewista because I was a fan of this term and concept from the first Fibre Mood edition. Furthermore, the MC refers to the first letter of my first name, second name and third name (and also the names of my grandmother and great-grandmother).
Why are you a fan of Fibre Mood?
I love that Fibre Mood is often ahead of trends and provides clear step-by-step instructions. In addition, you can go in many directions with one pattern. Fibre Mood has a very inspiring community!
What is your favourite pattern from Special n°2?
The Coral dress immediately stood out for me because of the beautiful open back and bow. I could use another short summer dress, so the choice was quickly made. Meanwhile, I also made the Mehri bag. Lucca, Dune, Dahlia and Nousha are also still on my sewing list and my daughter really wants a Pearl jumpsuit and Giti bag. So the Special no. 2 was received here with great enthusiasm!
Where do you find inspiration and how did you go about matching your chosen fabric to this pattern?
After choosing a pattern, I dive into my fabric closet and pull out some suitable fabrics. I then drape them around me to see how the fabric falls and if it matches how I envisage it. I usually call my daughter and husband to ask for their opinion (and then do my own thing anyway). ???? For the Coral dress, 2 fabrics were left over and since I really like colourful fabrics, I went for a colourful print.
Anything else you'd like to say to the Fibre Mood team?
I super like the mix of patterns for kids, women (men are definitely allowed too) and DIY projects, so more of this can definitely keep coming! I also really like that you listen to your audience and bring very inspiring content.
