Interview

Where does your love for sewing come from, or the idea to make it your profession?

My love for sewing was literally passed on to me from an early age. My grandfather was a costume master at the Nuremberg Opera House, and as a child I played among sewing machines, dress forms and buttons. In the 1990s, I started sewing myself using an international sewing magazine.
In 2023, I founded my own label for scarves and accessories. By the end of 2024, I realised that I also wanted to sell the beautiful fabrics I use for my scarves. PS Fashion Fabrics gave my small label the opportunity to enter this business. I mostly work solo, alongside my main
job. Whenever I need support, my partner helps me – he even joins me at fabric fairs and
advises me. That’s something very special, and I truly enjoy it.

How long have you been running your shop?

At the beginning of 2025, I launched my online shop www.schnittversteherin. com for fabrics, patterns and currently a small selection of haberdashery.

Why should Sewistas buy their fabrics offline rather than online?

With me, Sewistas can shop both online and offline. Anyone who contacts me is very welcome to visit by appointment to see, feel and purchase the fabrics in person. I also offer an additional service: if there are questions about fabrics or matching fabric and pattern, I’m happy to send videos directly from my fabric stock.

How important is personal contact with your customers?

Personal contact is extremely important to me. Through my Instagram channel @schnittversteherin and my well-known “feel videos”, I can bring fabrics closer to Sewistas who live further away. These videos show the texture and behaviour of the fabric, giving a real sense of how it feels.

What added value does an online shop offer?

My customers are not tied to opening hours. They can find inspiration through my Instagram Stories and order from the webshop at any time. Thanks to my efficient setup, most orders can be shipped the very next day.

What can Sewistas expect in your shop?

I carefully select fabrics that immediately inspire me with ideas of what to make from them. Of course, there are sweats and jerseys, but my true passion lies in woven fabrics. Sewing a
high-quality cotton into an elegant blouse is simply unbeatable. I am not a full-range supplier – and that’s intentional. I prefer a strong, curated selection over offering everything.

Where do you find inspiration for new fabrics and patterns?

I draw inspiration from shop windows, TV series, street style and fashion imagery – always looking for new colour combinations, materials and silhouettes.

Are there any nice hotspots near your shop?

My Sewistas mainly find peace and calm with me. My shop is located in a rural area – perfect for unwinding after an inspiring fabric shopping experience.

What was the first pattern you ever sewed?

In 1991, a Burda jumpsuit and a striking strappy dress from Burda International.

Do you notice a revival of handmade fashion?

My customers are mostly Sewistas who continued sewing after the pandemic and have since raised their expectations when it comes to fabrics and patterns.

Do many young Sewistas count among your customers?

It’s a healthy mix. My customers are women who enjoy sewing stylish clothing for themselves – and being cool has no age limit.

Which Sewista do you admire?

Every woman who sews for herself or for others. I’m always deeply touched when customers send photos of their creations that I’m allowed to share in my Stories.

What is your ultimate dream?

Being able to give this interview is something I would never have imagined two years ago – that already says it all.

What is your favourite Fibre Mood pattern?

The Elaine top from Fibre Mood 21. Its beautiful neckline flatters every figure. I sew it in both woven fabrics and sweat – it always looks amazing.

What is your favourite Fibre Mood fabric?

All of them! I’m incredibly excited about the new collection that I’ll soon be offering in my webshop.

Which pattern would you recommend to a beginner Sewista?

The Bree top from Fibre Mood 32. Stylish and accessible – just make sure to pay close attention to the notches.

Which pattern is perfect for a Sewista looking for a challenge?

The Doris dress from Fibre Mood 16. The sleeves require more precision, but the result is an elegant and special garment.

Do you have a golden tip for our Fibre Mood Sewistas?

Press, press and press! Every seam deserves the iron – it makes your project look professionally made. Some even call me the “ironing police”
